what does it mean when they wire your mouth shut and how do they do it?
Question:
Answers:
I had mine wired shut after a kick in the chin. They anchored two strips of metal along the top and bottom teeth and then used high tension elastics to bind the strips of metal together keeping my teeth clenched. Not fun, I lost 30 lbs because I had to drink everything.
p.s. don't try blending a piece of chicken in the blender and drinking it, it leaves a disgusting film inside your teeth and you can reach them to brush it off.

when the jaw has been wired SHUT, you've been banged all in your mouth from a fist or two. or three..or four
To have you mouth wired shut.. they actually wire your jaw closed usually for healing purposes.
If you go to a good surgeon they will not touch you until your infection is gone. They will give you some meds to take to get rid of the infection. I don't know anyone who has had their jaw broken while getting their wisdom teeth out. It is their job to just take out the teeth not the whole jaw.
if there is a really large infection and it has made your bone really really thin (unlikely because you'd already be hospitalized (simply has already pointed that out) with a ginormous swelling, fever , probalby find it hard to breath and be in tremendous pain plus it would take a very long time to get to that stage i.e. more than 6 months) Then there will be a high chance your jaw bone can break from any pressure on it.
A break caused by breaking the jaw where the wisdom tooth is would not require wiring. IN the UNLIKELY event of fracture a plate to hold the jaw together maybe be required.
Again though, there are other other much much more likely complications than jaw breakage (and they are quite unlikely as well). I wouldn't even worry about the breakage possiblity. Almost every dentist will give you antibiotics to clear up any infection prior to surgery. Then normally, they will give you antibiotics along with your pain meds when you come home. The dentist wanted to break my jaw when I was younger due to TMG, but decided braces were a better bet. They were going to surgically break my jaw and then they would wire my mouth shut in the correct alignment with wires and things hooked to braces or "mounts". Good luck!
