TMJ questions?

Question:
I was just diagnosed with TMJ, they said that they can make a mold of my teeth that I can wear at night and it will keep my jaw inline. They say that it will cost about $525 just to get one. I was wondering if there are any other treatments out there that are cheaper and that don't have anything to do with surgery. I have to get all my wisdom teeth extracted on the 15 of august.
Is braces an option? I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that I will probably lose, so I don't want the molding thing.
Thanks in advance

Answers:
you do not say how old you are and what your symptoms were that lead to this tmj diagnosis but i can say that tmj disorders are fairly common among women of childbearing age.

depending on your situation- ortho could help but only if it is because of the way your teeth are aligned. my understanding of this is that mostly it is caused by stress. at night when you are asleep and therefore unable to control your gritting/grinding is when the most damage can occur from sore muscles, headaches ect to broken and fractured teeth.

a nightguard is a wonderful way to ease the discomfort the gritting/grinding cause as well as the damage that can be caused. they are expensive and they do give you a case to store it in so it reduces the chance of you losing it or the dog eating it.

you can get a 2nd opinion and other cost and treatment estimates but as a last resort i would go to walmart and buy a sports guard and cut it to my size, heat it as the instructions say and try that during the night to see if it helps.

I urge you to go seek the advice and opinion of an "Pankey" Dentist. There is a great deal of education and experience with occlusion and the tmj that these Pankey Dentist have, above and beyond dental school and years in practice. Not to disrespect any other dentist out there. It has just been amazing to me, the help I have seen come from "Pankey" dentists, that could not be found elsewhere. I would definitly check it out, they know what they are doing. Here's a Link:

I would try another dentist or orthodontist. That is kind of high for that. Our office is alot cheaper. Don't chew any gum or eat anything sticky or chewy. Don't over extend your jaw. Have you tried advil? They should try to get you comfortable with your TMJ or TMD first before treating you with braces. Make you sure that you tell your oral surgeon about your TMJ before he or she does the extraction. Your jaw will be even worse after that. Good Luck!
