What are the odds of getting permanent numbness in your bottom lip after jaw surgery?

Question:

Answers:
Yeah...I guess it depends on the kind of jaw surgery you have. They say that permanent nerve damage is very rare. I can't find any numbers, but I DID find on several sites that you're more likely to have permanent damage from lower jaw surgery than upper jaw surgery.

My dad had surgery on his lower jaw to fix an extreme overbite, and after the surgery he couldn't feel anything in his lower jaw. They told him it can take a year or two for the sensation to return (apparently being numb for up to a year after is fairly common).

Here we are, 31 years later, and he still has no feeling in his lower jaw. Makes it difficult to shave (gets plenty of nicks), and if he drips hot soup on his chin, he can't feel it and it'll burn him without his knowing it...
permanent, not likely

a few hours almost definately
The odds are 50-50... either you will or you won't.
