When a dead person is so disfigured they have to be identified by dental records..?

Question:
.how do you know who their dentist is if you cant recognise them?

Answers:
What they do is try to determine all of the information they can on the corpse, such as sex, approximate age, race, height, etc., as well as any identifying features such as scars, tattoos, etc. Then they search their data base for any missing persons, starting in the immediate vicinity and working outward until they have a possible match. Then they get information from the missing persons family to try to match their dental records or DNA through hair from their hairbrush or possibly through the DNA of their parents or siblings. If they are fortunate they will get a match and be able to make an identification. Lots of these cases remain open for many years or are never solved at all! Especially if the corpse has been undiscovered for a great length of time!

Good question.

Brilliant. More like that please National database.

If a name is suspected, a family member would have that information. This is only used when they think it might be someone known.

Maybe they just looked in their wallet or purse; or took the number from their mobile phone?

I would think they would look through missing person records to see if the profile of the person or area the person had been found in matched anythig firstly and then check dentist records.
I would imagine there would be other clues to link the person to something, they would go all CSI on them ??
Have you never watched Bones on Sky, they can ID you from you bone bits. Dental records are useful to confirm the identity of someone when you think you know who it is already.
