side to side, close to the gumline. You want to remove the bacteria from beneath the gumline so that they don't accumulate there and cause tooth decay.
the correct way is :

for your top teeth , You go from up to down , starting at ur gums and going down.

For your bottom teeth , you start again at ur gums, and move upwards.
up and down. This will clean the inner depth in between both the teeth aswell..
you stroke one way. stroke down but don't stroke back up.
The right way is do is: for upper teeth start at the gum line and come down. Some thing with the bottom teeth. If you have braces make sure to brush between gums and the brackets. Always use a soft tooth brush and make sure you brush long enough. The studies show that you have to brush at least 2 minutes and on average when you time a person, they do it for less than 45 seconds. That is why I recommend my patients to use an Braun electrical tooth brush with a timer. If you are planning to buy an electrical tooth brush, by one with a time and a round head. Hope that helps.
Definitely Up and down if you do side to side you can wear the surface off and cause painful scoring of the enamel.
