Know of a remedy for jaw pain due to an abscess?

Question:

I see my root canal dentist on Monday but it is no fun waiting. Pain is only at night. Laying down makes things much worst but sittling up is tolerable. Ambesol is of minimal help. Location of pain is under tooth that has had 2 root canals so far (1 about 10 years ago and the other 5 months ago).

I had abscesses before and I had to get them drained. I had 4 at one time! I was also in the hospital for 4 days. If it is absolutely killing you, go to the hospital, but if you are able to deal with it, then just wait to see your dentist on Monday. Good luck!

The only thing I can suggest is taking alieve if the Dentist said it was alright. My husband had two abscessed teeth but ended up getting all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. I know he was in a lot of pain. However, the Dentist gave him some pain killers because we had to go to another Dentist who actually did the surgery.

Applying a cool compress to your jaw may elevate some pain as well.

IF you are having this much pain then the dentist should have called in something for you, at least an antibiotic to help start healing some of the infection. If you are not allergic to anti-inflamm. such as Advil, take 6-8 hundred milligrams every six hours. Keep taking it regularly so it stays in your system and there is no overlap in time where there is not any in your system. Alleve can work, but I like Advil or Motrin (ibuprofen) myself. If it makes your stomach upset make sure you eat crackers or a piece of bread when you take it. Anbesol will not help as it can't get to the root of the tooth where the problem is. The best that you can do at home is as mentioned above, and try warm moist heat. This will help the infection localize quicker as it is drawn to warm heat. I would expect that your dentist is either going to re-treat the root canal or perform an apioectomy either way you should find some pain relief.
