Question:

Answers:
Receding gums is/are like a receding hair loss. It occurs in waves. There are periods were loss is minimal and then all of a sudden you'll loose more in a given time frame.

In some cases a braces can really help control one the factors that contribute to gum recession; Cleansability. One of the problems with misaligned teeth is that it creates hard to brush profiles, where some teeth stick out and get brushed more and others brushed less. By having your teeth straightened it can actually make it easier for you to maintain your gums at their current state. Make sure you discuss this with your orthodontist, he will move your teeth slower because of the pre-existing bone loss.

unless your teeth are really screwed up they will be a waste of money
the orthodontist would know. Go and ask one.
Gums aren't like hairlines it's a sign of Gingivitis and you can correct it.
Braces are never a waste of money. Depending on the amount of recession, you can always have a gum graft after you finish with orthodontics. However, you should talk to your dentist and orthodontist, if you haven't already. They will be able to answer your questions, and come up with a treatment plan.

My mom has braces and she's the same age
I've had braces before a couple times. The receding gums I had back in my twenties and they were a result of the teeth not being properly lined up. Make sure you see a quality orthodontist.it's definitely worth it! (The first orthodontist I had was a quack and I ended up having to get them done again years later.) Most orthodontists will work out some sort of payment plan. I got my braces off about 6 yrs ago and I'll be 50 this summer.
