No, it really doesn't. However, there are better materials to use these days.
Most definitely my friend.
I am 45 years old & have had mercury filings since I was a kid. Personally I haven't had any problems but if they can use something better on my kids if they need it I'd be happy with that.
Let's get one thing straight here first. Noboday has 'mercury' fillings. The silver fillings dentists place are called amalgam fillings because they are made up of sevral different metals one of which is mercury. There is silver tin copper and other metals present too. The mercury content is kept to a minimum because in large doses it is toxic. Amalgam is one of the best restorative materials around, it provides a great seal with the tooth, doesn't wear down is stong under biting loads etc. If you worried about having amalgam fillings in your mouth then don't. The mercury released from an amalgam filling is tiny and maximum release is during placement or removal. I place and remove about 20 or upwards amalgam fillings a day at work and I'm not concerned about my health. My advice to you is don't expose yourself to mercury release unnecessarily to have your amalgam fillings removed. Wait untill they need replaced then get white ones. The trouble is if you look after your mouth you might not need them replaced for another 15years.
Many people believe amalgam fillings are harmful, however, there has been no credible scientific studies that show that they do. However, there are a lot of studies that show that they don't do any harm. People say dentists are doing it for the money. Well, wouldn't taking out everyone's silver fillings, replacing them with composite one, then charging all these patients/insurance companies amount to a large amount of profit? The main thing why dentists continue to use amalgam despite the fact that many other more aesthetic materials are available is because it's a safe tried and true restorative material. It lasts longer than composite, is very predictable, and less technique sensitive when placing.
