I'm a dentist and whiten teeth all the time.
The three main modes are over the counter such as Crest Whitestrips, custom trays with bleach dispensed by your dentist, and in-office high intensity light bleaching.
The cost is in order from least to greatest.
I am not a big fan of the Whitestrips. When they work, they do an OK job. The problem is that they don't always adhere to your teeth and will fall off. Hence you have wasted your money.
Professional bleaching is the way to go for the best and most lasting results. I favor the take home custom trays. I do so simply because the results are usually excellent and is the most cost effective. Touch ups should be done every 6 months or so.
With the in office bleaching (ZOOM, Brite-Smile, etc.) you get a dramatic and quicker result. You will pay a lot more for it and after your teeth rehydrate, the difference between that and take home bleaching is not significant.
Price range is about $40 - 50 for WhiteStrips, $300 - 700 for custom trays, and $700 - for in office. (I think)
