Just reassure your child that the dentist is not a bad guy and that he is going to fix the "bad guys" on his/her teeth. I also think that it is important for a child to see a dentist at an earlier age for a "happy visit" meaning that the child will become more familiar with the dental office and dentist, maybe sit in the chair and go up and down, etc. Also another suggestion, sometimes pre medicating helps a little bit to ease the nerve tension.

My four year old had to get 3 fillings and did not have a problem. I go to a pediatric dentist and he uses nitrous oxide. She was so relaxed she didn't even know what was going on.
Sometimes if the child has had a previous bad experience with the dentist, or have witnessed a bad experience of a family member , it can scare them enough to make them cry. sometimes hysterically.
My 3 year old has some major decay going on, and she's not a good patient. She cried and whined all throughout her first filling, so my dentist sent us to a pediatric guy. He wants to hospitalize her to get the work done, which I think is a bit extreme. We are going to a different pediatric dentist next week, I'm hoping just using nitrous oxide will calm her enough so the dentist can do the fillings. How old is your child? I think how mature the child is is the key to getting through fillings.my girl is not very mature yet! Good luck to you and if you have a good dentist then your child should have no problem.
I cried but I have sensitive teeth and dentist scare me, it really isn't that painful.
find a dentist that specilizes on painless procedures and loves kids i know of a really great one in kcmo
I don't have kids, but I work for a dental office.the best advise that I can give is for the parents to stay in the waiting room.if a child has their parents there, they feel like its ok to cry.but if the parents can't be seen by the child, they tend to stay more relaxed (I'm not sure why this works, but it does)
To answer this question, I would also say, go to a pediatric dentist. They may use oral conscious sedation or Nitrous oxide, depending on the behavior of your child..and their age. There are different types of cries, and each means a different feeling the child is having. A pediatric dentist understands these cries. Depending on the maturity of your child, they will probably do just fine.
A note to the mother of the 3 yr old. If your child has many cavities it is best to take them to the OR. At 3 years old, and depending on how much your child weighs, some pediatric dentist will not do oral sedation on your child. Also if they have many cavities, that would mean giving them medication 3-4 or 5 times in order to get the work done. We have to be very careful in young children of that age to not give too much anesthetic and also with them already depressed if doing sedation. The Nitrous on a 3 yr old may work, but not for longer and many appointments. Also with Nitrous or oral sedation, your child will move and wiggle - when taken to the OR they are asleep and the pediatric dentist can do the very best work on your child.
