I went to the dentist on Thursday, it still hurts, what do I do?

Question:
Thursday morning at the dentist, I couldn't pin point the exact tooth that hurt so he settled on the one with the cap and said he'd do a root canal in 4 to 6 weeks. He couldn't see anything on the X-Ray. In the mean time I'm taking amoxicillin and 800 mg ibuprofen. At noon I took two amoxicillin and my teeth didn't hurt too much, but still hurt some. But the next morning one specific tooth began to ache horribly! And it's not the one he chose; it's the one in front of it! I called back the office to ask when the pain will stop and whether I should come back. She said three days, and I come back next Friday. I can't stand the pain. I have to watch my son and I get so angry. I've never had anything like this happen in 34 years, never pain like this that wouldn't stop with medication. I've been putting ice. I don't know how I can trust the dentist if he was going to root canal one tooth and now it's clearly another? Last night I had trouble sleeping because of it. Do I need percocet?

Answers:
First off, i wouldnt exactly trust your dentist either after hearing this story..sorry, but true!

If an x'ray was taken... he would have seen infection. If he said nothing was wrong, then why the antibotic? You dont give antibotics for nothing! So i'm wondering what he saw and he didnt tell you! Hmmmm...

Another thing, sometimes it is VERY HARD for us to pinpoint where the pain is coming from, if you the patient dont even know! There is a thing called 'referred pain'.. in which it feels like one tooth, when infact it's another tooth. All we can do is take x'rays. If we see something, we tell you and try to fix it. If we dont, then either a) we can either play the guessing game or b) wait it out, till the patient can tell us more. Yes the patient leaves sometimes still in pain.. but if we DONT know and cant see which tooth it is.. what can we do, seriously?

Also... if you think you KNOW exactly which tooth it is... simple, go back and tell them. Dont phone them, they most likely wont see you. But if you go in, they shouldnt turn you away.

**Now, if your having trouble sleeping because of this tooth... ROOT CANAL..!! Sorry to say, YES it needs one. And NO.. dont wait 4-6 weeks without getting it done. Thats insane!! I'd really question your dentist. He doesnt sound very professional to me!
lay down take a tylenol pm and close most of the air vents
