Filling turning into a Root Canal??

Question:
In August, I went to see a dentist. He said I had quite a few cavities, one of which was coming up on the x-ray and the others which he just "saw." I ended up not going back to him to get fillings because insurance reasons.

I made an appointment for the first Monday in November with another dentist to get the cavity fixed, but now I'm starting to panic that the cavity may have turned into something that will need a root canal as opposed to a simple filling. Would that time span (from August until that Monday) give a cavity enough time to turn into something like that?

I'm probably being very overly paranoid. I've had pain in the gum near that tooth for a while now (even in August when I went, and they thought I had food stuck in it or an infection that they wanted to give me an inserted antibacterial pack thing in my gum). I'm wondering if that's a clue that this is more serious?

Help? Anyone?

Answers:
It's very possible. When a cavity is to big the tooth becomes dead so a root canal is done so you wont lose th tooth completely. (it's still a dead tooth though even with the root canal) I went through three recently and to be honest root canals are easier that cleanings and fillings. But one thing that wasn't mentioned is a crown. If you receive a root canal you more than likely will ned a crown to protect whats left. The crown is what gets expensive. Best of luck to you
Hard to really say. You are probably going to be fine, a few months shouldn't have hurt anything.
