Can I pay for a root canal now, and get reimbursed by Medi-Cal/Denti-Cal later, since it takes 4-6 weeks?

Question:
My dentist told me it would be 4-6 weeks before he will receive approval by Medi-Cal to perform the procedure. I have money to pay for it now, and I want it done ASAP because the constant pain is annoying.

Or could I pay a different, non-Medi-Cal accepting, dentist to do it for cash and then file to get the minimum back from Med-Cal and pay the remainder myself?

Answers:
If you want to pay the dentist, he would have to be willing to reimburse you, dependant on the insurance company. Most state plans will only reimburse the dentist and not the patient.

If you see a non-par provider, you will not, in all likelihood, be reimbursed, unless you have out of network benefits. Most state plans do not offer those.

CA might be a bit different than most other states.
