Is Whitening Mouthwash effective?

Question:
I'd like my teeth a shade whiter, it's kind of embarrassing. I was thinking of using a whitening mouthwash, like those seen on crest commercials and such. Would it be effective? And which ones? Crest or Listerine, etc?
And is it safe? I know people sell things on the market that can be harmful. I've heard things like chewing gum (the whitening kind) can cause cancer. Does this apply?

Answers:
Listerine whitening mouthwash is effective and it is not harmful. I know someone who used it and they got good results. I think that using Crest Whitestrips would be much more effective however, it is alot more expensive.
I use the listerine whitining pre rinse and i like it alot it works good and keeps the whiteness up.
