Answers:
I worked for an orthodontist..here's how it goes
When you show up for them to put the braces on, don't be nervous it doesn't even hurt. Afterward you mouth may be a little sore (nothing some tylenol won't fix)
Just avoid sticky chewy things, and take it easy the first few days you have them. And, remember how nice your teeth will look in the end!
Other Answers:
Buy a water-pik.
Learn to enjoy soup.
Keep your rubber bands in.
Learn to live without gum or chewy candy. Might want to buy some Oragel to numb your lips sometimes they can scratch and hurt for a few days this will go away on it's own though. Get ready for painful rubberbands that snap in your mouth. Oh, and not being able to eat corn on the cob!
Waterpik might be a good investment
Take 400 mg of Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc) before you get them and then every 6-8 hours after for a day or two. Have fun. It's definately (spelling?) not the most fun thing in the world! I had them for about a year and a half, just got them off 3 months ago. I don't have a lot of advice, other than take REALLY good care of your teeth, gums, braces, etc while you have them. It is really helpful to do that. And right before your appointment, take some Advil or Ibuprofin or something. And have it on hand for a probably the next week or so. You will have some pain every time you get them adjusted, but you learn to live with it.
And be careful what you eat! hehe
I would go ahead and get some ortho wax to have on hand, as well as a product called Rincinol, which is carried by Walmart and drugstores. It is a swish solution that can help in the event that you have any rubs from the brackets. The orthodontist will also give you some wax to put over the brackets, which will also help with any abrasions.
If you have soreness, you can take Tylenol and be sure to have "soft" foods on hand, such as mashed potatoes and soups. You won't feel like chewing anything.
And, please, please, please be sure to use the Christmas tree looking brush to keep your braces clean as well as a prescription strength flouride toothpaste while your braces are on. This will ensure that you don't get the "white spots" from the tooth enamel breaking down after you have your braces removed.
Don't take this opportunity for granted. Many adults wish they had had the chance to get ortho, and also many regret that they didn't wear their retainers later, when their teeth all move back to their pre-orthodontia state. If you do everything the orthodontist says, then your treatment will progress. If you delay wearing the rubber bands or doing what he says, then you just make it harder on yourself. Just something to think about!
