I have this crazy urge to chew on stuff, why?

Question:
Okay, I think maybe my wisdom teeth are coming in. My bottom teeth are a little crooked now (I had braces as a child) and I feel this little piece of tooth kind of partially covered with gum in the back of my mouth. Is that possible? To have one tooth come out and the others still be under the gum?

Anyway, I have this INSANE urge to chew on stuff. It's like I'm teething. I want one of those baby toys to naw on, haha. Does this sound like it's my wisdom teeth? And is it safe to chew on stuff? Should I see a dentist and get them pulled?

Answers:
It definitely sounds as if you are getting your wisdom teeth. Most people get them when they are a young adult, and at nineteen as stated in your profile; this would be the right age. The need to chew is typical also, that is a basic instinct kicking in that would help us to wear away at the gum tissue in order for the teeth to come through more quickly. Most people will start feeling one or two teeth coming in ahead of the others. I had to have mine pulled, when I was eighteen, as I have a small mouth (I can hear my family laughing at that one) which means that the wisdom teeth will push your other teeth out of alignment. Make a dentist appointment, and he will determine how soon you will need to have them extracted. I worked at an oral surgeons office many years ago and he used to recommend that his patients chew gum or have a Popsicle to help with the urge to chew sensation. Good luck.
Definitely go to the dentist. Often times one wisdom tooth will come in before the others.
