This guy at my work has the worst breath in the world. How do I tell him this without making him cry?

This is much much more common than you think. I have been there and dealt with that before. Here is what I think that you should do to try to overcome this little situation. The first thing you can try is to try offering a mint of gum everytime you are near or close enough to this person that you can smell his breath. This may not become obvious to the person the first couple times you offer but after a few tries then the person will notice that everytime you see him/her you always offer them some kind of mint or gum....they will catch on that "hey it must be my rank breath...haha". If that dosent work then you can try another indirect approach by talking about stories of people you know with bad breath and say something like" I sure would hate to have bad breath around anyone I know its so embarrasing thats why I always try to eat a mint or gum...." Something like that can get the persons mind to thinking hey "I wonder if my breath reaks".....and if that fails then try the most direct approach without hurting there feelings. In a joking manor say to them "Hey friend (laugh) haha your breath is rank today...what the heck did you eat (laugh).......smells like something died" This should work being direct as possible while keeping the conversation as light as possible.

GOOD LUCK! The gum and mints deal should work good! Don't fret!!

If he makes your eyes water, you should just go ahead and make his by telling him!
I doubt he will cry but if he does then he is very immature. Offer him some gum. Then offer him some mints. Just throw hints at him for a little while and if that doesnt work then tell him that some people are getting offended by his breath and starting to talk about him.
Start by telling him:, 'If this ever happens to me, I would want you to tell me...'
Give him some mints maybe he will catch the hint.!
if his breath stinks someone needs to tell him .. offer him a case of strong breath mints
Tell your supervisor, let them handle it.
Leave a tin of Altoids anonymously placed on his desk. That should clear it up.
polite, annonymous note. He may need to see a dentist or use a tongue scraper.
There is no harm in touching on the subject by asking if he would want to try tongue scraper, or chewing mint leaves or fennelseed to counter any foul breath. It is getting to the problem in as humane way as possible by recognising and acknowledging the problems, and suggesting available ways to overcome them.

Sometimes, it is the heatiness from the spicy food, or dry mouth from a hot day. Offering your friend herbal tea or cooling drinks is a good way to get over the irritation. It is easier to ask about the results after a while without the need to cause possible offence.

Later on, it is easier to suggest trying out rinsing the mouth three or more times during the day, or even brushing more times. Another shortcut is rubbing toothpaste into the teeth, and rinsing it off in the washroom later. They keep the breath fresh and manageable.

It is a matter of management in not making him cry in the first place.
