I went to a private root canal specialist. He wanted to charge me £800-900 per tooth. Is this normal?

You are seeing a specialist who has studied for at least 8-10 years to learn his art. He is not a plumber or builder (who would charge considerably more and you would not think twice about paying it).
You will definitely find cheaper dentists around, and even cheaper specialists, if you go looking.
If you trust this specialist and are happy with the standard of his work, then it is not too high.
If you don;t trust him, then it may be an idea to get a second opinion and find someone that you trust.
It is like buying a car. You are seeing the absolute best clinician that you can ( a specialist), so it is like you are buying a Bentley and paying a lot for it. Are you paying too much? For a car , YES, but for a bentley, NO.
You could easily find a cheaper car that will do the same job but won;t be to the same standard. It will still get you from A to B though.
Same with dentists. You could easily get a root canal done by your local dentist for a fraction of the cost, with a success rate of anywhere from 50-90%. It will probably seem just as good, and will work just as well, even though it won;t be too the same standard.
depends on how many and what is required ...
does sound steep tho ..
