Answers:
I SO SYMPATHIZE WITH YOU! I just had surgury last Dec. and let me just tell you what it is like. First of all my jaws were messed up so bad I couldn't even open them but maybe 3cm, on a good day. I ate a lot of mashed potatoes. When I couldn't get anything done about it I decided to have surgury. It does help some people. Right after surgury your face will swell so HUGE you won't want any one to see you for about 2weeks. It is usually an overnight stay @ hosp. I had to have both sides of my jaw worked on. I could barely breath - no air gets thru those wires. It hurts like nothing else. (I'd rather go thru child birth again. ) And the only thing that helped me is the morphine they pumped into me to keep me asleep! At time I could barely sip down water. I lost 40lbs. It took almost 2 mos. before I could start drinking potatoe milk(constistancy of). Like I said it is not that bad with everybody. In fact I never heard of anyone having it that bad. I had it done in Jackson. ANd I still can only open my mouth half way and still have a constant migrain.
But I do have a better way out for you. PLEASE try this FIRST! It sounds like you still have lots of hope. Go to a chiropractor! They will help. It is 99% effective for cases like yours. And get help SOON! TMJ will start to mess up the elignment in your neck, shoulders , back, hips - I waited tooo late & I am messed up because of it! I can 't pick up 20lbs anymore because of the damage. I pray for you & I hope this was useful!

It probably will hurt, but I'm sure the doc will give you pain medication. Plus, look at the bright side once it is done you won't have the pain from TMJ any more.

? Oh geez. DON'T do it! My aunt had it done 3 times (no joke) and she STILL has sever pain. I remember visiting right after her first surgery and she was in extreme pain.
There are lots of things that help:
-Heating Pad
-$25 jaw guard that you buy at drugstore (DO NOT get suckered into buying the $800 one from your dentist. It dries out and loses its shape and the cheap one is WAY more comfortable)
-Muscle Relaxers
-Accupuncture
-Consciously making an effort not to clench your teeth when stressed (for ex, I put my tongue btwn my teeth so I don't clench)
-make it a rule not to chew gum

any surgery hurts. Check out the side-affects and post-surgery common problems. Also a consultation would probably answer a lot of your questions. And your dad is right, it's probably TMJ. But they don't do surgery unless it's pretty severe. Get your full dental work and jaw surgery in India.Dental Surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges cosmetic/dental surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.I have also read that they arrange financing for international patients as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by the stinking NHS.

They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star .

My cousin got her full dental work and jaw surgery for the cross bite and the overbite problem due to TMJ done there and she is more than very happy with the results.sHe is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company. She paid just 30% of the cost what she was quoted in USA and it was like a wonderful vacation for her.hope this helps.I think she paid only 7000$ for the full dental surgery for which she was quoted 19000 $ in USA.

http://www.forerunnershealthcare.com I know someone who had TMJ, and that person got the surgery and said it was no big deal. It's only a minor thing, and it solved the problem, so I think you should do it. It's going to help.
