How long do dentures usually last?
Question:
Answers:
Theyll last forever as long as you take care of them my great-grandma had hers for 30 yrs
I had my first denture for 20 years
I had to get a new one made when i had more teeth out. It broke after about 2 years. The repair lasted 12 months. If yours is metal plate it should last a while
Plastic ones can break easily
That is a very hard question to answer. For instance, I just saw a lady who has full upper and lower dentures that I made for her in 1982 and I swear, they look like I made them yesterday. She is 80 and she just thought, "It must be time for new ones." I told her that her teeth were perfect, they fit perfectly well, and I couldn't make any improvements if I made new dentures. That's 24 years. I see many, many people who get about 20 years out of dentures. There are some who are younger, more aggressive in their diet, etc., who don't do as well, but I'd still say 10-15 years is the minimum you should expect if the dentures are well-made and if they are made of premium materials. Note: "Well-made" and "made of premium materials" are two totally different things.
Well, as a number of my elderly patients are fond of pointing out, they foten have dentures that are older than me! (I guess that would be 31..)
Anyway, the big problem you run into is re-shaping of the bony ridges on your jaws, esp the lower one. When this happens, the best thing to do is get them re-lined and they fit like new.
this usually isn't more than a couple hundred, whcih is small change considering dentures are usually 12-1400 as far as I can tell.
And if they loose a tooth, try cementing it on w/ super glue, making sure it's lined up correctly first and don't get the glue on your fingers, or you'll find you'll never misplace your teeth!
Both tooth replacement and cracks can be repaired for not much money by your dentist, so don't fret!
if they can come out you can become a gummer
I've had mine for about 2 years also. I was told when I got mine that they usually last anywhere from 3 to 10 years depending on how they are made.
I CAN'T IMPROVE ON THE COMMENTS OF DR.SAM OR DR. SWANSON. THE BEST ANSWER IS ON THE MANNER OF CARE GIVEN TO THEM.
