you'll need braces to help pull it down into position. if it's already poking out of the gums, the orthodontist just needs to put a bracket on it and use a small chain to gradually pull it down to the level of the other teeth. usually a pair of bicuspids will need to be extracted to make room for the canine(s).

if the canine is impacted below the gums, a minor surgical exposure is necessary. this involves cutting a small slit in the gums, drilling away a little bit of bone if the tooth is still covered, and then placing the bracket and chain on the exposed crown of the tooth. usually an oral surgeon will do this at the request of the orthodontist, and afterwards the patient is sent back to the orthodontist to continue treatment.
