Anyone know anything about expanders?

Question: I have an orthodontist appointment at 5:30pm today (9/22/06) and I have to get an expander put in, I know what it is and does, but does anyone know how long it takes to get it put in? Does it hurt on the first day? When you turn the key, on a scale of 1-10 (1-not painful, 10-very painful) how much does it hurt? How big does the gap between your front teeth get? And when does it start to gap? Let me know if you know anything about it! THANKS!

Lots of people say expanders hurt but they go in in like 30 seconds each. They go in for a week and then they put braces on.
