I'm a smoker. I had a big issue when I had a tooth pulled. I had to gargle with peroxide and water. Smoking can cause a dry socket. Also I read that clove can ease the pain. I'd talk to your dentist. I couldn't believe smoking could cause so many problems with having a tooth pulled.

From what I've seen come through the pharmacy, I would say the bacteria are gram positive and are treated with Penicillin or Amoxicillin. If the dentist isn't sure or if the patient has a Penicillin allergy, I've seen them use Keflex (Cephalexin) or Cleocin (Clindamycin) which kill a more broad spectrum of gram positive/gram negative bacteria. You don't really know which bacteria you're dealing with unless you run a culture on it. All the best to you.
Not sure what causes the infection but any antibiotics that you can take will clear it up. You just will need to take them for a while if it has gotten to bad. I had one and ended up taking 2 different things to get it cleared out, also see your dentist it may need to be drained if it is pretty bad. Don't wait it can spread.
