Orthodontis Work?

My orthodontist put what I think is called a "stein plant" in the front of my mouth above my two front teeth. It looks just like a piercing almost. The bone in my upper jaw is suppose to grow around it, and it will raise my upper jaw up. Does anyone else have this, or can anyone give me more information on it? I had the procedure done 3 years ago, and am wondering when or if the stein plant (???, its a small metal thing) will come out.
