How do you use mouthwash?

I've only recently started using mouthwash, since my dentist gave me some for my gums. Only, I'm not sure as to how you exactly use it. My friends tell me to mix it with water, while my other friends tell me to pour it into a cup and use it directly like that.

i just started using listerine for the same reason. the dentist said to use it straight out of the bottle and swish for 30 seconds. the taste was almost unbearable at first, but i have gotten used to it now. i use the mouthwash first, then brush. it really does seem to have helped, so i deal with the nasty taste.
