I have a sore tooth. What could the problem be?

Recently I've noticed pain in my teeth. I don't think it's a cavity because I've had a cavity before and the pain is different. I should say the pain feels like it might be more in my gums than the actual tooth. It's also hard to tell if it's in one tooth area or two. Also a bottom molar on the same side has some pain too, but not as bad. Anyway, it doesn't hurt all the time. Since I noticed it about 2 months ago, it's happened maybe 3 or 4 times and I always notice it in the morning as soon as I wake up. I have the feeling I clench my teeth pretty hard some nights and that's what could be causing it. The pain only lasts the day and then it feels fine.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be the problem? I really hope it's not something serious. I haven't been to the dentist in a while, and I know this isn't an excuse, but I do take pretty good care of my teeth so I don't think it's anything too bad.

Also, any ideas on how to alleviate the pain?

Answers:
You are probably clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth at night. There are night guards and other appliances that can keep you from doing this. You should probaby go to the dentist to rule out a cavity or something worse and the dentist can also advise you about the night guard too. For the time being, a little orajel on the teeth/gum area that hurts and some over the counter pain relievers should help.

The next time this happens note down what was going on in your life at the time. If you find that it only happens when you've had an argument with someone or something like that then you can practice some stress relieving yoga or meditation before bed.

Affordable companies?

Chicka and Susan have good guesses and I'll add my guess. If you have not had your teeth cleaned in a while, it could be your gums or the necks of your teeth. The inflammation that devlops when you have plaque and/or tartar buildup will feel just like a mild toothache.

We deal in the convention of a six month interval for most patients, but that is purely tradtion. It works most of the time, but some people start to have the feelings you are describing after maybe 3 or 4 months and, even though six months has not passed, for THEM it's time to get their teeth cleaned again.
