That's terrible! I had braces, so I remember how uncomfortable it was to get them applied and removed (not really painful only discomfort). So will you try Invisiline instead?
Surgery for constricted palate?
Generally medical procedures involve high grade inert materials but people can be allergic to just about anything. I do believe that if you were allergic to your braces you would have had reactions to the specific metals before having them on. I'm pretty sure that it's only surgical stainless steel and maybe some aluminum in there. Soupcans and whatnot are made out of those metals. Some people do have different reactions depending if the material comes in skin contact or is ingested though. My guess is that you're just having a tough time adjusting to them. Trust me, the pain is something you'll always remember.
I was allergic, yes, but I left them in at my doctor's advising. After a few months, I pretty much stopped reacting unless my immune system was haywire for other reasons (like a cold.)
It hurt like hell the first few weeks. The inside of my lips hurt as much as my teeth.
I can't wear stainless steel watches or jewelry either, so I guess I should have expected it.
Is it normal for the gum area around the tooth to be swollen after a filling?
Yes you are right. Some patients are allerigic to metal's in the braces. I am an Orthodontist and took braces off for a kid recently because of metal allergy. In such patient's I use GAC titnium brackets. Titanium is shown to be the most biocompatible material and often is the metal of choice for several replacement surgeries and also for dental implants.
