I have a very bad toothache!?

Question:
I had a filling put in my tooth about 4 years ago. Well this year is when it really started hurting bad. The filling is still there, but it is very painful. It started hurting in August for about a week then it went away. Now it's hurting again.I'm making an appt. for the dentist but I won't be able to go until after Nov. 11 cause I'm going out of town this week. Is there anything that can help with it until I can get to the dentist next week? I feel like crying and i get mad becuase it hurts so bad! And please no rude remarks, I don't have time for that. Please be honest and nice.

Answers:
Ibuprofen is your best choice for over-the-counter medication.

"Prescription strength" would be 800 mg, 3 or 4 times a day. You can not do this for more than a few days without proper evaluation, though.

Hot water will probably cause it to hurt, so be prepared with some cold water, if you try the warm salt water rinses recommended above.

In addition to using the pain medication of your choice, sleep on an extra pillow to elevate your head. Sleep on the side that does NOT have a toothache. If that doesn't work, you can move to a recliner or the sofa so you can keep your head really elevated. This will minimize the blood flow to the area and therefore minimize the throbbing and pain. This might help you make it through the night until you can see a dentist.
Take lots of ibuprofen to hold you over for the next week.
Gently massage the gums surrounding the tooth with floss.
brush around the tooth and brush the tooth.. then rinse with mouthwash. try to keep food off the tooth as much as you can. don't chew on it either. you may have a crack in the tooth and food is getting into it.. or the filling has shifted due to any possible reason including a crack and foods is getting under the filling and causing pressure. or the filling has cracked or something and now it's adding pressure to the tooth that can hurt like hell also.

i'd say take codeine but you know how it goes.. try to eat foods that are soft or soups. when you go to rest or lie down.. prop yourself up so the blood don't go to your head and add pressure in the gums.

oh and floss around that tooth so no food particles are adding pressure.

i'd say take that 8 hour tylenol stuff.. it works better than most over the counter crap.

patience also will help. try to moderate exertion and relax. do things that don't take much effort and will keep the mind off the tooth.

if cold fluids helps.. do so. if warm fluids helps.. do so.

try whatever creates the most comfort. unfortunately.. any alcohol won't help. it'll just cause inflammation instead.
There are a couple of things you can do for temporary relief. Try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water, just put a tsp or so of table salt in a glass of warm water. This can be done several times a day. The other thing you might try is putting clove oil on a small cotton ball and placing this on the tooth..it tastes terrible, but it will help with the pain.
Since you can't see your dentist until November 11th,try what I had to try. Clove oil go to Rite-aid store ,CVS
pharmacy .Buy Red Cross Toothache medicine. Be very careful .Make sure you have lip palm on your lips first of all,When using it will come with very little tweezers
and little cotton balls it will numb your filling.I had a filling
that was close to a nerve ,I tried everything. But my dentist recommended Clove Oil.Be very careful to follow the directions and you should be okay until November 11th.
