What does relining a denture do?
I have an upper denture that is comfortable just the way it is and my dentist says it needs to be relined. I have had it for 4 years and never had it relined. Should I do it or just leave it as is ?
Answers:
Relining a denture puts a soft and pliable material inside of it that stays that way for at least a year. The rule of thumb is that every year or two you should reline dentures.
Talk to your dentist. Even if they fit comfortably, perhaps they are affecting your gum health.
Other Answers:
Re-lining doesn't make the denture more comfortable, as such, but it does improve retention. Depending on the denture, of course, you'll want to have it re-lined about every five years.

You do not reline a denture based simply on how old it is. If it still fits well, feels comfortable and does not fall out of your mouth, leave it alone. Ask your dentist WHY the denture needs a reline. If he gives you a good reason, then you decide, but don't do it for no other reason than "it's time."
There are different types of relines. Hard in-office, hard lab, soft and temporary. They are done to improve the fit and stability of a denture. But if yours has great suction and is comfortable, I dont think you need to reline it. In fact if you do, you may find that it is not comfortable any longer. Ask the dentist why he feels you need one and let me know.
