Take some tylenol or something like that before your appointment so it's ready to work when you get sore later on. Make sure you get wax and USE it. I didn't use mine for months until i learned that it actually does work, and they can show you how to do that (The wax covers the wires that might rub against your cheeks in certain areas). It's also a good idea to put it on before bed, because if you sleep hard against the braces the wax will help keep them from digging into your cheeks. Make sure you keep up with cleaning your teeth and flossing regularly since stuff can get caught easily in there. Have some jello or soft foods ready for the next few days incase you're too sore for real food, and keep that in mind for later appointments. Sometimes getting the new wires put on will make your teeth sore, sometimes it doesn't. It seems like the pain went down as I had them on longer. Once you get them off, make sure you keep wearing your retainers because the teeth will shift back somewhat without them (I wear mine just at night now). Lastly, try to have fun with it. I'm a dental person so I really enjoyed going and getting my new rubberband colors put on each visit and you'll have really nice straight teeth when you're all done.

Will it affect my treatment if I smoke cigars while I have my braces on?

Be happy that you are getting braces because when you get them off you will have straigh teeth!
