What do you call that thing the dentists use which emits blue light?

This thing is supposed to harden newly placed brackets on teeth and fillings.

Are they bad for pregnant women?

Has anyone ever went to a holistic dentist before?

Answers:
It is NOT UV , that is Ultra Violet, and causes all sorts of problems.

It's a halogen bulb with a filter. Blue light is what activates the adhesive and makes it set. It is also used for tooth colored fillings.

There is no reason to avoid dental work during pregnancy - in fact for the health of the baby, it is critical that your mouth is taken care of. The main reason dentists don't treat pregnant ladies is fear of lawsuits.

The blue light is the wavelength that cause glare, snow blindness and maybe cataracts. That's why there's that orange-red plastic disk on the light (or there should be). So don't look at that light.

It's a UV light and utilizes a UV curing process. I worked with UV curing technologies back in the eighties in the manufacture of circuit boards, some printing companies use a UV coating on magazine covers to give them a very deep gloss coating. This is just another application, it should be very safe as the point of light is focused on the filling only.

dentist, can you please help me?

Ask your dentist, mine would not treat me beyond a basic cleaning when I was pregnant.

Angela DDS I need help.?

It is simply a blue wavelength light. The modern ones use an LED emitting source.
They are totally safe during pregnancy. Think of it as simply a small component of a normal room light.
It is not a laser or anything like that.
