Is a root canal the only way to whiten inside teeth?

Question:
My front teeth are kind of dark in a spot inside my teeth. I'm guessing its from my teeth getting hit because all of my other teeth are white. My dentist recommends a root canal but I have a fear of the dentist office. Is there a way to whiten inside theeth?

Answers:
The tooth has darkened because the tooth is dead/dying. It's very normal for this to happen to a front tooth. A root canal alone won't whiten it. After the root canal is done, a whitening agent can be placed inside the tooth, where the nerve used to be and this will whiten the tooth from the inside out. This is called internal bleaching and it's a very easy and usually inexpensive procedure to do. The downfall is that the whitening isn't permanent so you'll have to do it every so often. For a more lasting effect, you can have this tooth veneered or crowned. If you haven't had a lot of fillings done on this tooth, a veneer might be best but if it's had lots of work done, than a crown would be the way to go. I hope this answers your question a bit.

Other Answers:
Root canal to whiten teeth. I had a root canal for infected nerve which was causing me so much pain that my head that I cannot do anything but lie down for an hour till the pain subsides. I believe root canal is to 'kill' the nerve in the canal of the tooth. Just to whiten teeth seems a bit extreme

The pain later went to my pocket, after finding out the bill for the procedure.
He is probably recommending this because the trauma of being hit caused the tooth to die. If this is the case, doing the rootcanal is not what is going to whiten the tooth. It is probably being recommended to clean out the dead tissue in the tooth. Once it is done he can do internal bleaching if you want him to, or if you get the tooth crowned or a veneer done it will match the other teeth. But doing one singe crown or veneer on a front tooth is one of the toughest things to do in dentistry. It is so hard to match porcelain to natural enamel.
You've already gotten good answers from professionals, but I needed to answer this to get to level 2.
