Hey I got mine off about 5 months ago. I just brushed three times a day. This classmate had hers off about 1 1/2year ago and she had yellow teeth and a white squarish spots in the middle of each tooth. I didn't want that for myself, It looked bad and nasty. Like she didn't brush her teeth, but it helped my teeth were good when i got them off.
Other Answers:
mouthwash and brush after each meal
Water-Pik. Not only will it clean around the brackets, it will massage the gums and when they tighten those suckers up. massage is good.
Hi Honey. My daughters have them too. Their ortho says to hold your toothbrush kind of vertically (u know, w/ bristles pointing down?), and move the brush up and down so that some of the bristles go BETWEEN the wires and your teeth. It seems to be working well for my girls. Good luck! You're going to be beautiful!
I was so bad off I had train tracks for five years! It was old school and I had headgear and I REFUSED to wear it to school. No way. But to keep the teeth clean, and this important because when the braces come off, you want a consistent coloring of your teeth. Take a portable toothbrush and toothpaste to school or to events where you will eat. Brush afterwards. In fact, brush every time after you eat. And to really get teeth clean, I got a "Water Pik". The squirting water dislodged food particles that the toothbrush didn't reach. A Water Pik is a must have for those with braces. My daughters had braces and I went out and bought a Water Pik. Good luck and you will love your new smile.
i got my braces off already rinse ur mouth now and then flose well
i hava braces too. they told me to brush after every meal, floss, and use mouthwash everytime you brush.
I'm 39 now but had braces for 4 years when I was younger, the kind that were metal bands around EVERY tooth. I was always afraid I'd end up with rust stains or something, but didn't. Anyway, I'm not even sure if they still make them, but if they do, get a water pik! That's how I did it, and it was very successful.

Did your orthodontist give you some proxabrushes? They are christmas tree shaped bristles. They clean under the wires and around the brackets really well. They have traveler size ones, you can carry them with you wherever you go, so after a meal you can clean around the brackets. Of course you need to brush well (an electric toothbrush works great, like a Sonicare), and floss daily even though it is a pain, as others have recommended the WaterPik and oral irrigator works wonders too. Also rinse with ACT fluoride rinse daily or use a Rx Fluoride toothpaste to make sure your teeth stay strong.
You could also try sucking on mints made with Xylitol, this natural sweetener actually makes it hard for bacteria that causes plaque and cavities to stick to your teeth. Just look at the ingrediants and make sure it is one of the first 3. (if you didnt have braces I would recommend chewing the xylitol gum).
Good Luck!!
lots of careful frequent brushing is very important, flossing and water pik. I had big metal braces on for 8 years to try to substitute for surgery. I learned not to eat many foods that clung to the teeth and between them, and to go thoroughly brush floss and pik after eating absolutely anything. This helped firm up my discipline about not eating between meals! I also used diluted mouthwash in my water pik resevoir, it seemed to help.
Not only are you trying to avoid tooth discoloration and damage, but also maintaining the health of your gums. Sick infected gums can damage tooth roots so that the lovely straight teeth you have worked so hard for will no longer stay in your mouth!
If you can, give up soda and sugared drinks.
Drink lots of clear water. It cleans and clears your mouth, in addition to being good for your overall health.
Good Luck on the Big Gleaming Smile
The best way, without a doubt, is to get a Sonicare toothbrush. This is a great investment even if you don't have braces. The ultrasonic action vibrates and loosens the food and bacteria around the braces and teeth. More importantly it helps to remove the plaque and bacteria below the gum line. You do not brush with the Sonicare as you would with a regular toothbrush. You basically turn it on and hold it in place for several seconds above and below the braces before moving on to the next area.
You should do this when possible after eating.
The other thing that you should do, ideally, is floss at least one time a day. This is more challenging since the wires keep you from going straight between the teeth. Use a floss threader with about 3 feet of floss. Thread the threader under the wire and keep the threader on. Floss with the double piece of floss, and then pull it through with the threader attached. This takes a while at first, but it will pay-off in the end.
I am an orthodontist with braces on presently. If you don't want to keep your Sonicare brush with you all of the time, you can use a regular brush. Just be sure to brush back and forth, both above and below the braces.
Good luck!

THIS IS GROSS.
