I am having my wisdom teeth removed today. Can anyone tell me what to expect?

Question:
I'm not really nervous, but it is the first real procedure I'm going through, and I'm not sure what to expect. Any help would be appreciated.

Answers:
If you're having IV sedation, you will remember little if any of the procedure due to the amnesiac effect of the drugs. If the teeth are completely impacted, there is likely to be post-surgical swelling and some discomfort, for which you will probaly be given a prescription. Often, the post-surgical healing is uneventful and, with a modicum of TLC, you will be back to a normal routine in 2-3 days. Good luck and remember to follow the surgeon's instructions carefully.

Other Answers:
I had a major dental phobia when I got all mine removed a couple of years ago, but I was pleasantly surprised after and during the procedure. They may put you to sleep or they may not, but they have really really effective anesthesia, and it will probably not be nearly as painful as you fear...I actually had hardly any pain at all while they removed the teeth. Afterwards, take your pain pills and relax. Good luck!
If the procedure is done correctly, you will be put out and will never feel anything until afterwards. It will hurt but they should give you pain medication. There will also be swelling but ice packs 20 minutes on then off for a while should help with that.
It will take a few days for swelling and pain to stop and the really odd thing is that you will keep wanting to feel the hole with your tounge (that stops over time too). But you should be ok.

Best of Luck
It was my first real procedure, too. It's not THAT bad, it's kind of like having braces, you're limited to what you eat. I had to eat mostly soup-like foods the first few days...shakes, smoothies, applesauce...etc. It didn't hurt the day I got them takin out because my mouth was still numb from the medicine they gave me to put me to sleep. The 2nd day my mouth was in total pain, but it got better. I guess the worst party to me was having to wear the gauzes in my mouth, and the continuous bleeding. I also got stitches, but they didn't bother me at all. Lastly, I really got tired of having to squirt the back of my mouth with water, because food gets stuck in the wholes where the teeth were takin out. I did it till my whole started to close up, which was a couple of weeks.
