Your dentist is a "quack". There is not way that tooth should still be hurting and, certainly no good dentist would say it'll eventually get better. I think the other people here are right, sounds like an abscess. Please find yourself another dentist and go for a second opinion.
I hate to say it, but you may need a root canal. It sounds absessed.
