Cavity or just a stain? Confused............?

Question:
I went to the dentist yesterday for a routine check up and cleaning, and was shocked to be told that I have 4 cavities!! They were to be found in the molar pits. My molars have very few stains in the pits , other than that they look fine. The stains are still present after the teeth cleaning. But the teeth look fine on the surface and I don't see any kind of holes in them. They are the same color as the rest of my teeth. In fact , I have NEVER experienced any kind of pain in my teeth. I have good dental hygine habits and do not indulge myself in much of sugary stuff. The dentist wants me to have my cavity filled or have a possible extraction!! Is this an early stage cavity or not a cavity at all? Can I save myself from the drilling by following a much more conscious healthy dental routine in the future.

Has anyone experienced anything like this or should I get a second opinion?

Thanks a lot

Answers:
Second opinion!
If you don't believe your dentist, request your X-rays (and please tell me films were taken) and take them and your teeth to another dentist for a second opinion.
