Do you dread going to the dentist? What is your personal dental visit coping strategy?

Question:

Answers:
I wait until I've smashed a tooth or a filling drops out, then go because I have no choice!

Also, I've found the kindest sweetest dentist in the world, who's an expert in the art of being gentle with 'dentist chair white-knucklers' like me.

I don't recommend my first strategy, but the second is definitely the way to go!

i like the dentist

YES i dread it. just becuz i dont like any1 digging around in my mouth.well i kinda blank out (like in school :D) and its over when its over I used to like goin to the dentist until a few months ago when I had to have cavities filled. It's not the drilling that bothers me, but the needles. I was able to cope by just closing my eyes the whole time (so I wouldnt see anything I didnt want to see) and just thought about other things.

Oh yes, I once went over ten years and even now I'm avoiding it . But don't be like me because I'm 43 and I have 2 loose teeth. (And no that's not due to meth mouth)

I used to be terrified of it. I'd have hysterics and literally try to jump out of the chair.

A very patient, wonderful dentist I lucked out on figured out that I was terrified of needles. He helped me overcome it by teaching me some calming methods (meditation techniques) and giving me control over when I got the shot. He had me tell him when to give it. That little bit of control solved my problem. One I got past the needle panic, he could do darn near anything to my mouth without me moving or jumping.

But when I moved away, I had to go through over 8 dentists to find one who'd follow my instructions on how not to panic me. I didn't think they were THAT difficult, but 8 dentists did not follow them. A good dentist for this nervous patient was hard to find.

I still don't like going but it isn't the terror it used to be. I finally found a dentist who'd do it so I don't panic. It took real hunting. Bring an ipod with. Don't worry about the dentist, even if you have bad teeth. Trust me, they have probably seen much worse, if they give you any crap find yourself a new dentist. Just think, an hour if that is all you need to spend in that horrible little room while they dig around in your mouth.
