Angela DDS I need help...?

Question:
In December I got a crown on one of my eye teeth. They said it was a deep cavity. I've had pain every once and while since. They did an X-ray and said it was fine. This past week it's been hurting worse. I've always been afraid they didn't get enough of the cavity out. It's been hurting especially at night. When I floss, it feels like I'm touching a nerve on the one side. Could I be flossing down to low? Would flossing a couple times a day help it? Or do you think I need root canal? Sometimes I feel the pain in my jaw or my chin. I just saw the dentist in June.

Answers:
That sounds like the tooth may be abscessing. If the cavity was close enough to the nerve, it can kill the nerve. If so, you'll either need a root canal or have to lose the tooth (which I don't recommend - if you can keep from it). Another possible answer is the crown may simply be hitting the other teeth too hard and need adjusting. I'd call or see the dentist again and explain all your symptoms. If they still can't find a problem, you may want to go elsewhere for a second opinion. In the dentist's defense, in the early stages of an abscess, sometimes you just can't see it looking in the mouth or on an x-ray. And, teeth can be hypersensitive after a deep filling or crown. It can be hard to tell whether it needs a root canal or just some time. The fact that it hurts more at night is OFTEN a sign the nerve is dying. Sorry, I know that's not great news.

remember one thing-- a dentist performs a service, and you pay him. basically, if you are not happy, ie in severe pain, then you should not let him tell you how you feel. it is his job to make your mouth feel the way it should as well as look the way it should. your pain should be his concern and there is no reason why you should have to put up with pain when flossing! go back and tell them to do something.
Get a new x-ray if the last one was in December. It's sounding like you need root canal treatment to me. Go see your dentist. A lot can happen in just a few weeks when the nerve is dying.

Just for fun, tap on your tooth by flicking your finger against the tip of the tooth. If this hurts, it's a bad sign...........
The answers above are great!! If a toothache that wakes you up at night and it's continuous or throbbing pain, a tooth abscess is possible and the common treatment is root canal. So just tell your dentist what symptoms you are experiencing and he might ask you more questions, do some test on the tooth and take some new x-rays to determine the exact cause. So good luck.

Note: if the pain is becoming intolerable, take some ibuprofen and Tylenol.
