Which is stronger- amoxacillin or penicillin?
Question:
Answers:
They are different versions of penicillin. Amoxicillin is the drug of choice (DOC) for sinus infections, It doesn't work well at all against bone infections. If the infection is treated during the first 2-3 days, Pen VK is the DOC. After that, augmentin is DOC.
Your oral surgeon may be concerned about a soft tissue infection that has gone on longer than 3 days.
Sorry Nightrain551 but Amoxicillin is NOT recommended for bone infections - it has very poor bone penetration.
Other Answers:
Same basic drug..Amoxicillin is the ORAL form of Penicillin.Penicillin is usually an IV or IM injected drug.there are oral penicillins but amox is used more frequently
They're the same. They're used to prevent bacterial infections.
I agree with some of the statements above. Antibiotics are not really rated by strength but rather effectiveness toward the bacteria causing the problem. Both Amoxixillin and Penicillin vk are broad spectrum antibiotics in the same class. They are chemically similar but not the same drug. They are both effective against gram positive and gram negative infections both of whihc can be found in the oral environment. Amoxicillin is better at treating sinus infections like the doctor says above but it is no worse than pen vk at treating other oral infections. Some docs like to switch up antibiotics to avoid bacterial resistance.
To sum up, they are both effective
