In continuation of my earlier question, How safe is mercury filling?(silver amalgum dental fil)?.Refer details

Answers:
The "amalgam is poison" debate has been raging for years with both sides claiming science supports them.
I think a reasonable approach is to look at all the facts and decide for yourself. Does it sound logical that so many of these amagams fillings are out there, have lasted for decades, and people aren't dropping dead right and left? Also, why are any dentists alive who have been working with and inhaling this material for 20, 30, or more years?
If you have an amalgam restoration that is leaking, cracked, or has recurring decay underneath, get it replaced. Personally, I'd skip the resin material and go for the way more expensive bonded porcelain onlay/inlay. (Since I work for a dentist and get a substantial discount!)
If, however, you have a perfectly functional amalgam filling, why compromise the tooth by disturbing it with a drill? Also, far more mercury would be released by drilling into it then by leaving it alone.
The hysteria surrounding amalgam vs. non-amalgam isn't going to go away. As an informed consumer, you can make reasonable choices if you study BOTH sides, talk to your dental care provider, and base your choices on facts rather than emotion.
