Canker sores (apthous ulcers) are usually caused by either trauma or stress. They take like 7 - 10 days to resolve. You can buy some OTC products to help reduce the uncomfortableness but it won't speed up the healing. Stay away from spicy and acidic food & drinks.Good luck from a canker sore queen.
Sores are usually caused by viruses. Herpes Virus 1 causes sores on the outside of the mouth as well. Look up Herpetic gingivostomatitis. See if that is what you have. People with the virus will have recurrent outbreaks. These sores are usually located on fixed to tissue, (tissue that it over bone like the hard palate).
Another thing that it could possibly be is a recurrent aphthous ulcer. You can look that up as well. These are usually located on loose tissue in the mouth. In other words, tissue that doesn't have bone underneath it. Like the inside of the lips or under the tongue. The cause of these is still debatable in the literature, but it is known that it is your immune system detecting something in the mouth that it thinks is foreign. People that get these usuallly get them frequently. These kind of Canker sores are triggerred by a lot of different things and it is usually difficult for people to try and pinpoint what it is.
As for management , it depends on whether it is viral or not, for the most part though, treatment is palliative, meaning that only the symptoms are treated. Aphthasol is prescription med that research has shown can speed up the healing process and the extent of the ulceration. Go to your dentist if it is a chronic problem and he/she will be able to prescribe something if it is needed.
canker sores, if that is what you actually have, do not have a defined cause yet. However, there are some treatments for them. When you have one or feel one coming on, you should avoid acidic food like tomatoes, strawberries, soda. You should also avoid highly processed sugars as they seem to make them worse. As for treatments, you can have them burned out with a nitrate stick...hurts a little for a minute, but then takes the pain out of the canker sore. Also, if your dentist has a laser, they can use it on the ulcer. It will take the pain away and it will help it heal faster. There is also some research that shows that you will not end up with an ulcer in the same place again. If you have never had one before, it might be a good idea to have your dentist check it just to make sure that it is indeed a canker sore.
I get them all the time. Usually when I accidently bump my toothbrush somewhere in my mouth while brushing or drinking too much orange juice.
