Crown had abcessed root canal & it left behind a hard swollen lump on my face? What can I do for relief?

Question:
I have had the crown for about 6 years. When it started aching and swelling my face, I went to the dentist. He did a series of xrays and determined that it needed a root canal. I took antibiotics for 48 hours and returned for the root canal. The root canal was successful, and I have continued the antibiotics. The pain is better, and the swelling down some. However, there is a HARD lump of swelling right where the apex (point end) of the root was. It is very sensitive to the touch and hot.

What can I do for relief?
When should I expect it to subside?
How can I tell if this is progressing normally?

BTW, this hurt worse than any pain I have ever had in my entire life!

Thanks for your ideas.

Peace be with you,
Annamaria

Answers:
Sounds to me like the infection from your tooth has spread to your sinuses. Your face has a lot of sinuses that are very close to your mouth and eyes. Keep taking antibiotics AS PRESCRIBED and FINISH THEM. NO excuses. Being that there's a hard lump, infection may be trapped. Your dentist probably put a temporary filling in your root canal for such an occurance. Hang tight and just make sure it doesn't get ANY WORSE. If it does, you should go to the E.R. because an infection getting worse after this much time on antibiotics is bad news. Good luck!
