Baby has 8 cavities, anesthesia or demoral for getting them fixed?

Question:
My daughter is almost 3, needs the dental work done. I'm scared of her being by herself for an hour awake and scared, but also scared of having her knocked out. Anyone had any personal experience?

Answers:
i had a similar situation when one of my twins was 3...she had to have a tooth removed because she had damaged it...they gave me the same option,i chose to have her get the anesthesia for a few different reasons...one she would have someone she didnt know with her which would cause her stress and two she would remember the ordeal for years to come if i chose to just use the other meds...ultimately its up to you hun...you know whats best for your daughter.
They'll probably let you go with her. Ever since I can remember I've had to get dental work done and for some reason I am absolutely petrified of the dentist. I think it's some subconscious thing but I'm 15 now and I absolutely hate it every time I have to go to the dentist.
I worked an a oral surgery office and I would say have her put to sleep. It will be so much easier on the doctor and your daughter. She will be asleep, calm and not remember anything. You also dont want her to remember a bad experience or she may fear the dentist later in life. After kids wake up they always seem to bounce back fast. Some kids get sick from the medicines when they wake up but still seem to bounce back quickly.
There's always the fear of anesthesia that is real and a small chance you take. Thousands of these procedures are done daily on children under anesthesia with little or no problems. If they gave you the option, go for the anesthesia. It's so much easier on these little ones. Also, the dentist will be able to do the work easier, better and more efficiently. it will also allow your daughter to have a healthy attitude about dentist visits instead of one filled with fear every time she has to go.
The risk of demerol is actually greater than the risk of general anesthesia, because if she has general, she'll have an anesthesiologist watching her and controlling her breathing, which is safer. Demerol can cause her to stop breathing - it's not a great anesthetic, and is usually given by people who don't know a lot about anesthesia. I NEVER use it, for a variety of reasons.

That's a lot of dental work for a 3 year old, and you know she's not going to hold still for all that. Heck, I'D have trouble holding still for 8 teeth!

Tell your dentist that you want her to have general anesthesia done by an anesthesiologist. We know how to take care of kids safely. We make it both safe and comfortable for children, who can be a real handful if awake or sedated.

Hope all goes well.
