Just had 4 wisdom teeth removed.?

Question:
Had them pulled out so there aren't any stitches that I know of, I'm about to go to bed and was wondering am I supposed to sleep with gauze in my mouth? The bleeding isn't to bad right now, drooling a bit but that is about it.

Also i just ate some soup, is that ok? I didn't chew any i just pretty much swallowed it.

And lastly what is this dry clot i heared about? or dry socket something like that, thanks in advance. -Mark

Answers:
a dry socket is a hole in your gums where the tooth was.. is closes after a while.. don't take out the gauze that is in the hole.. that is what is keeping it clean.. and you should be eating out of a straw for now.. if you develop pain go to the docs and they will put in another piece of gauze that has meds on it it will help dry the socket out.. that is why you need to keep the gauze in also... i hope this helps..
gauze can come out, a dry socket is when the clot in the socket isnt there and it bloody hurts, usually from smoking, eating drinking, l lived on soup for about a week as had dry socket, if alls well you should be pretty much back to normal in a day or two.
don't sleep with the guaze in your mouth - you could choke on it. The bleeding should have slowed enough to not need it after a couple of hours.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled I got dry socket in one of them. It means that the hole doesn't close up - it just stays open with your jaw exposed to the air. And it hurts, so you won't have to guess if you get it. Trust me, you'll know. I went back to the dentist and he plugged the hole with sphagnum moss, which tasted terrible, but stopped the pain and helped the hole in my gums to close.
I just got mine removed in April,
I was told to keep the gauze in my mouth for the first 24 hours to KEEP from getting dry socket, and to gently apply pressure with my jaw like bitting down but not as hard, I would sleep sitting up it worked for me, pudding is another great staple of soft foods, your jaw will probably be sore from them keeping it propped open, for a few days and chewing is hard until that goes away, they should have given you an after care sheet with what to expect for the next 2 weeks, bone can pop up through (little shards) the openings, and you can have rough edges that may need to be shaved down, they should have given you a syringe looking squirter to clean the holes after 5 days, call your dentist for sure if you don't know what to do next... you do not want an infection~
Good luck!
I had my four taken out this time last year and all I ate was soup for four days - through a straw - and I haven't been able to eat it since, so try and have a varied diet, maybe soggy cereal, yogurt or mashed fruit. If you are swollen it should only last a few days, mine was 80% better in about four days and as long as you take some painkillers you should be fine. Don't sleep with the gauze but plump up your pillows to raise your head if it is still bleeding a little, also put an old towel or something over your pillow in case of any blood from the dribbling. I feel for you, good luck!
"Intermittent bleeding and oozing is normal and may persist for 24 hours or more. It may be controlled by placing fresh gauze over the surgical areas and biting down for 30-60 minutes. Gauze should be removed when bleeding stops. Place a towel over your pillow due to oozing that may last through the night." I would suggest taking the gauze out, especially if you feel you'll not bleeding severely anymore. The gauze is only to apply a bit of pressure to the wound, like what you do when you get tiny cuts.

Soup was fine as long as it wasn't too hot. After i got my teeth out, my instructions said "Temperature of the food doesn't matter, but aviod extremely hot foods." cold foods (such as yogurt and ice cream) are better for the swelling.

In order for your sockets to heal properly, they had to form blood clots and new tissue will grow over, but sometimes they lose the blood clot from the socket ("usually on the 3rd to 5th post-operative day) avoid eating foods like nuts, sunflower seeds, popcorn, etc., which may get lodged in the socket area." Also the sucking motion you make when using a straw to drink with might loosen the clot.
