We still sometimes hear people joking about something being "so awful, I'd rather have a root canal". LOL they are talking about the root canals the way they used to be done a lot of years ago before you were even born. Today, having a root canal is a breeze. You have to sit in the chair for a little while, of course, and listen to the sound of that highspeed drill, but you never feel a thing.

I've had four or five root canal procedures, and I can promise you, it's nothing to be scared of at all. Not even a little bit. You wont even need gas, because the dentist will place some pain deadening stuff right around the tooth area through a tiny needle, and all you feel is just a stick when the needle goes into the gum, and then maybe a couple of seconds when the stuff is being injected. He'll leave you in the chair for a few minutes for the stuff to start working, and your gum feels completely dead.
When all the drilling is done and the canals are cleaned out, the dentist will make an impression of that tooth area so he can make the exactly right shape of crown. Actually the impression gets sent to a laboratory where they make the crowns, and this will take about two weeks. The dentist will pack the area and put a protective cover on it, and you'll be given an appointment to come back when the crown is ready to install.

Your follow-up trip to have the crown fitted will require no more injections, and no drilling. He'll try the crown for fit, ask you how it feels, and make some adjustments if necessary. Once you tell him it feels comfortable, he'll cement it in place and you will go off home with your brand new "chomper" which should last you for a very looooooong time.
root canals suck-bigtime..no guarentee on the crowns tho..i had a crown fall out 3 months afterwards..not happy..good luck
Hi, here is what will happen with the root canal.
your dentist will numb you up,
he will then remove all of the decay in the tooth and open a small opening into the pulp chamber. he will then use what are called files,, they look like sewing needles to clean out the bad nerve tissue, ( when numb you dont feel this at all). he will widen the canal doing this repeatedly a few times. He will then use paper points to dry the canal out. he will then measure and use what is called Gutta percha to fit into the canal. Soft rubbery filling... He will then take an x-ray to make sure it is the right length then cement it in. he will then heat an instrument to trim off the excess( again doesnt hurt). then place a temporary filling.
It is usually best to wait a week or two for the post and crown. On an front tooth you can get away without a post. However molars need one. You will go back he will remove the temporary filling measure and find a post that fits your tooth and canal cement in. he will then shave down and prep the tooth for the crown. You will be given a temp crown for about 2 weeks depending on their lab. You will then go back to have the crown seated. very simple process. Crowns with good margins last any where from 10-20 years.
