Going to the dentist?

Question:
my littl ebrother has never had his teeth cleaned before, he bruches twice a day. but when he was very young he wouldn't brush his teeth so now he has this build up between his teeth. what is that called? and what kind of damage will it do to his teeth?

Answers:
The build-up comes from plaque, but its actually called tartar. The actual damage to the enamel (surface of the tooth) comes from the plaque, it produces acid that can cause decay. Theres not much that can be done at this point, since it has built up over time, however, at this cleaning, they can (will) remove the tartar from the enamel. He should be fine, most kids have tartar build-up, even adults...
The build-up is called tartar or calculus. It's what happens when plaque gets left on your teeth and it hardens. The only way to remove it is by a dentist or hygienist. If it is not removed, it could cause decay in his enamel. However, with regular cleanings, he shouldn't have anything to worry about.
