Answers:
Icepacks should be kept as cool as possible (icy cold is best)

To stop bleeding (completely) might take as much as 1 - 2 days (depending on your healing rate). The worst of the bleeding should stop within an hour or so (down to a trickle for both sides), and then your mouth should heal up enough after the 2nd day that the bleeding should have stopped, but will still be somewhat fragile and very tender.

You should always spit the blood out. It might contain something that could cause an infection. Also, your stomach is not setup to process blood very well. Some people will even throw up if they swallow blood, which will get stomach acid on those holes in your jaw which may re-open the what little healing you will have done!

After surgery (makes sure someone else drives you home!) you will be in pain and will want to lay down. You should try to sleep in a sitting position for two reasons:

1) Blood from the surgery will pool in your mouth. If you are horizontal, the lowest point is the opening to your throat. You could choke on the blood and again, throw up, or cause hacking & coughing which can damage the skin in your mouth and worsen the bleeding.

2) Blood will flow more slowly to points higher in your body (less pressure). The bleeding in your mouth will slow somewhat from being in an upright position.

Also, to speed healing, you might try rinsing your mouth with salt water every 4 hours or so. Salt helps open wounds heal faster. And for the next 3 - 4 days I would recommend eating only soft foods (soup, yogurt, cheese, soft fruit, soft breads, cool drinks only!) to give your mouth time to heal and toughen up those open spots.

How soon after le Fort I osteotomy I can have the plates removed?

i would get a gel ice pack and wrap it in a hand towel so it dont burn your face and i would get in the recliner and lounge around for a few days and stick to chicken/beef broth,, also spit out that blood, get a bottle and just drool in it,, after a few days i would recommend the salt water gurgle/rinse,, wish you the best of luck

Anyone on line from the West of Ireland?

1. Ice should be applied and for no longer than 20 minutes every hour, but keep a cloth between the ice pack and your face.
2. Depends on how fast your body forms clots. Ask your dentist if you're still bleeding after 3 days.
3. Spit it, or in your case let it drool out. (the force of spitting can reopen the wounds) Blood is very hard to digest.
4. Sleep however you feel comfortable.

I hope you heal up soon.

"Crest Whitestrips" Are they any good? Do they work? (please answer only if you know from experience)

1) please ice the area if you can on the extraction area for the 1st day so you can keep the swelling down. Starting the second day please use warm moist heat in the area to help the healing process.
2) For surgical extraction you might bleed for a few days. Please avoid the area on brushing on the 1st day, do not smoke, or do anything that would irritate the extraction site. If the area still bleed a little, bite on the guaze provided by your doctor or lightly bite on a wet tea bag.
3. Please swallow it. If you spit you might spit out the blood clot with is very important on the healing and not getting a dry socket(very painful).
4. Sleeping position probably not going to affect the extraction site(never bother me when I had my own wisdom teeth extracted). Any position is comfortable for you should be fine.

More helpful info:
Soft food only for the 1st few days and start to rinse your mouth with warm salt water on the second day to keep the extraction area clean and help the healing process, but don't rinse too hard or you will rinse out the blood clot.
Take over the counter pain med(tylenol, motrin-helps to keep the swelling down, advil) or pain med prescribed by your doctor regularly for the 1st couple days if you don't like to experience any type of pain. Since everyone's pain tolerance is different, it's up to you. Pain/swelling should peak at 24-48 hours and get better after that. Try not to do heavy excercies or any heavy duty work, just relax, you have gone thru a lot. If you have any question regarding the post surgery condition always contact your doctor!!!
