What can I do about my receding gum on one tooth?

Hi, I'm still in my teen years and I am starting to freak out because I noticed that there is a small cut on one of my upper teeth and that it had receded! It's swollen and it' gets sensitive when I eat. I believe it's because I brush my teeth with too much force.

I told my mother about it and she said not to worry beacuse it will heal. I don't really believe her.

I don't know if it can go away. I think I'm too young to already be developing receding gums or anything like that. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. I just don't know what to do. Thanks.

Answers:
You should probably give it a couple weeks, then re-evaluate it. Is it still sensitive? Does it still seem swollen? In the meantime, make sure you use a SOFT bristle toothbrush. Any other type is too harsh on your gums. Also, be really diligent about flossing every night before brushing your teeth - this goes a really long way toward keeping your gums healthy. If you feel like the problem is persisting or getting worse, by all means go see your dentist.

Is this a cavity?

Your brushing too hard or too long. It will heal back off.
