Answers:
Triazolam (halcyon), although usually prescribed as a sleeping pill, is a medication that can greatly minimize anxiety that may be associated with going to the dentist. In a
relaxed state, you will still be able to communicate with the dentist while treatment is being performed. Even though it is safe, effective and wears off rapidly after the dental
visit, you should be aware of some important precautions and considerations.
1. The onset of Triazolam is 15 to 30 minutes. Do not drive after you have taken the medication. The Peak effect occurs between 1 and 2 hours. After that, it starts wearing off and most people feel normal after 6 to 8 hours. For safety reasons and because people react differently, you should not drive or operate machinery the remainder of the day. Wait until tomorrow.
2. This medication should not be used if:
• You are hypersensitive to benzodiazephines (Valium, tivan, Versed, etc.)
• You are pregnant or breast feeding
• You have liver or kidney disease
Tell the doctor if you are taking the following medications as they can adversely interact with Triazolam: nefazodone (Serzone); cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB,
Novocimetine, or Peptol); levadopa (Dopar or Larodopa) for Parkinson’s disease; antihistamines (such as benedryl and travist); verapamil (calan); diltiazem (cardizem);
erythromycin and the azole antimycotics (nizoral, biaxin, or sporanox); HIV drugs indinavir and nelfinovir; and alcohol. Of course taking recreational/illicit drugs can also cause untold reactions.
3. Side effects may include light-headedness, headache, dizziness, visual disturbances, amnesia, and nausea. In some people, oral Triazolam may not work as desired.
4. Smokers may notice a decrease in the medications’ ability to achieve desired results.
5. You should not eat heavily prior to your appointment. You may take the medication with a small amount of food, such as juice, toast etc. Taking it with too much food can
make absorption into your system unpredictable.
6. Nitrous oxide may be used in conjunction with Triazolam and local anesthetic.
7. On the way home from the dentist, your seat in the car should be in a reclined position. When at home, lie down with your head slightly elevated. Someone should stay with you for the next several hours because of possible disorientation and possible injury from falling. An escort is required to bring you to the appointment and to take you home.
I don't know how much it costs.
Halcion is a sleeping pill. Not sure why you think it is an anesthetic.
The dentist I work for prescribes it for patients who are extremely anxious. It is a prescription so the cost depends on your insurance. You will have to have somebody drive you. It just helps you to really relax. Talk with your dentist to see if it's right for you =)
Halcyon is not an anesthetic, it is a sedative that helps you sleep. It is a little like Valium. You don't buy it at a dentist's office, you would probably have to have go to Mexico to buy it. Doctors are reluctant to prescribe it, because it has made a few people freak out. See if you can get the dentist to prescribe oxycontin. It may help you mellow out, but it won't help you with pain.
If really need to score some Halcyon go to the dentist Nycole works for, he may be the only tooth doc who still prescribes it.
Sorry, but oxycontin is a narcotic (painkiller). Not to be used as a sedative. It helps relieve major pain. Most dentist will not prescribe or hate to prescribe C2 medications.
Are you sure it's not halothane? This is a general anesthesia and sometimes used in dentistry. Please check the name, if this is what you meant.
This is a commonly prescribed medication for reducing anxiety prior to and during dental visits. Typical directions are to take one the night before to help you sleep, one an hour before the appointment, and keep one with you in case another is needed.
Others are correct that you cannot drive while this medication is in your system.
It also has an amnesia effect. You will not recall much of your visit or things you did while taking Halcion. If you have financial decisions to make regarding your dental treatment, take care of them in advance. Someone should remain with you - someone you trust.
Most dentists to not dispense this medication, but they will prescribe it. I don't know the cost, but I don't think it is extremely expensive. Depending on your weight, it should leave your system within 8 hours or less.
You will still receive an injection of a local anesthetic to numb your mouth for treatment. You won't care, however.
