A root canal is when the nerve is removed from the tooth. The dentist will drill a hole in the center of the tooth and use different instruments to remove the nerve. You will be numb so there should be no pain. The whole process is done in two appointments. I just had one last week and I haven't had any problems at all. No pain during or after. Good luck!
Basically your dentist will drill down into your tooth and kill the root and nerve in it. he'll then put a peg in ther and cap it off. He shoudl numb your mouth when he does it and aside from a little soreness when that first wears off you'll be amazed how little pain their is... particularly compared to the pain of the toothache that leads you to a root canal!
I won't say it's a pleasant procedure but with a good dentist it should be uncomfortable rather than painful while it's being done and once it's done... what a relief!
Good Luck

A root canal ...the dentist will first give you anesthetic..then will make an access to get to the nerve inside your roots. He/she will clean out & shape the canals with special files. Sometimes there is a little discomfort when they get to the end of the root...every procedure is different. You shouldn't be uncomfortable, if you are be sure to tell your dentist right away. Sometimes they will finish the root canal in one day, other times they will leave it "open" to drain if there is a lot of infection. In that case you usually go back in aprox 2 wks to finish the root canal. After the root canal you will need a buildup which is actually a large filling they place in the access they made to restore your tooth. Then, unless the tooth is an anterior you will need a crown asap. The tooth gets brittle after a root canal & can break. Sometimes there can be a little discomfort for a few days after, but usually nothing too bad. Just be sure to take any meds given to you. Also, keep in mind 1 in 10 root canals fail. Failure is more common in females. I do still recommend root canal over extraction. Good luck =)
